The Mountain Valley Conference Nordic championships kicked off on Thursday afternoon at Black Mountain of Maine, with Maranacook and Orono taking the lead in both the boys and girls competitions.
In the boys’ 5k freestyle race, Wyatt Stevenson from Maranacook set the pace, finishing with an impressive time of 13:46.0. Silas Bartol, also from Maranacook, followed closely behind in second place with a time of 14:18.8. Samuel Geissinger from Spruce Mountain claimed the third spot on the podium with a time of 15:29.0. Orono skiers dominated the next four places, with Liam Waring leading the pack.
The girls’ race was a sister act, with Clara White from Orono crossing the finish line over a minute ahead of her senior sister, Ruth White, to claim the individual title. Clara finished with a time of 14:58.6, while Ruth recorded a time of 16:05.9. Maranacook competitors filled the rest of the top five positions.
The championships will continue on Monday, February 12, with the classical pursuit competition, also taking place at Black Mountain. The teams will have the opportunity to showcase their skills once again in what promises to be an exciting and closely contested event.

De Mountain Valley Conference Nordic-kampioenschappen gingen donderdagmiddag van start op Black Mountain of Maine, waar Maranacook en Orono de leiding namen in zowel de jongens- als meisjescompetitie.
Bij de jongens’ 5k vrije stijl race zette Wyatt Stevenson van Maranacook de toon, met een indrukwekkende tijd van 13:46.0. Silas Bartol, ook van Maranacook, volgde kort daarop op de tweede plaats met een tijd van 14:18.8. Samuel Geissinger van Spruce Mountain eindigde als derde met een tijd van 15.29.0. Orono skiërs domineerden de volgende vier plaatsen, met Liam Waring aan kop.
Bij de meisjesrace was er sprake van een zustershow, waarbij Clara White van Orono als eerste de finishlijn passeerde, ruim een minuut voor haar oudere zus Ruth White, om de individuele titel te claimen. Clara eindigde met een tijd van 14:58.6, terwijl Ruth een tijd van 16:05.9 behaalde. Maranacook concurrenten vulden de overige top vijf posities.
De kampioenschappen zullen op maandag 12 februari worden voortgezet met de klassieke achtervolgingswedstrijd, ook plaatsvindend op Black Mountain. De teams krijgen opnieuw de kans om hun vaardigheden te laten zien in wat belooft een spannend en hevig bevochten evenement te worden.
