In a stunning display of skill and determination, the boys and girls teams from New Paltz High School dominated the Section 9 Nordic Ski Championships, which took place at Gore Mountain. Moving gracefully through the snowy terrain, the athletes showcased their exceptional talent and secured victory for their school.
Making headlines in the competition was Beckett Evans, who claimed the individual title in the boys’ category. His incredible performance demonstrated his dedication to the sport and set him apart from the rest of the pack. Meanwhile, Angie Psilopoulos from Wallkill proved once again that she is a force to be reckoned with, as she defended her girls’ championship title for the second consecutive year.
Not only did the winners shine, but several other participants also earned well-deserved recognition. Skiers from New Paltz, including Henry Wheeler, Marei Jirka, Sam Hillman, and Dylan Friedman, showcased their prowess on the slopes and earned section medals. Graham Driskill from Wallkill and Giovanni Gutierrez from Monticello also proved their skills and claimed their places on the podium.
In the girls’ category, alongside Psilopoulos, a talented group of skiers from New Paltz, such as Hannah Ettinger, Roxy deNey Bhagat, Clio Miller, and Rory Gerber, impressed the judges and secured their section medals. Wallkill’s Katrina Brand and Monticello’s Kaitlyn Morse also showcased their abilities, earning recognition for their remarkable performances.
With such formidable talent on display, it is no surprise that several of these exceptional athletes have qualified for the upcoming New York State Nordic Ski Championships. The boys’ team will be well-represented by Evans, Jirka, Wheeler, Hollman, Gutierrez, Driskill, and Yousef Elsayed from Monticello. Likewise, Psilopoulos, Freidman, Ettinger, Bhagat, Gerber, Brand, and Morse will proudly represent the girls’ team.
These state qualifiers have rightfully earned their place in the prestigious championship through their outstanding performances throughout the regular season and sectional meets. As they prepare to take on Lake Placid on February 26 and 27, we can only anticipate yet another remarkable display of athleticism and devotion to the sport.
